Disclosed are a method for characterizing a layer (06), a method and a device for detecting a reference number, and a method for selecting a suitable layer to be applied to rollers (01, 02, 11, 12 16) or for selecting suitable roller geometries of a printing press, according to which a reference number characterizing the layer is formed or used. Said reference number characterizes the unwinding behavior independently of a measuring device or an application in a special printing unit.
