Prepn. of immunogenic agents against swine fever and vaccines containing them, comprises inactivation of cultures of swin fever pathogenic virus using an alkylating agent. The nature and concn. of the agent are chosen so that the kinetics of the inactivation reaction can be controlled and inactivation may be completed without causing denaturation of the virus; the inactivation reaction is then stopped by neutralising the excess alkylating agent. The use of an inactivated virus avoids the risks of development of modified strains of the virus, which may occur when living virus vaccines are used. The process leads to an effective vaccine, free from all pathogenic risk and having well defined, reproducible characteristics. The pref. virus used is known as A-19 isolated by Laboratoire Central de Recherches Veterinaires at Maisons-Alfort.
|
