A direct current electric arc furnace comprises a furnace housing (10) for receiving a charge (20), an electrode arrangement (11) containing a cathode (12) and anodes (13, 13'), and a current supplying unit (30) connected to the cathode and anodes for injecting a current into the charge and for producing an electric arc between the cathode and the charge. The electrical resistance of a branch (37) can be changed by a discrete value to influence the distribution of the current and to change the magnetic field in the region of the electric arc by a prescribed mass. An independent claim is also included for a process for positioning an electric arc (25) on a charge in an electric arc furnace.
