The system has an automatic gain control unit (30) associated with an echo canceller device (29). A multiplier (36) applies a transfer function of the control unit to an input of the canceller device such that a signal from a microphone (27) and a signal to a loud speaker (28) are manipulated by a function related to the transfer function of the control unit. An independent claim is also included for a telephone set having a digital processing system.
