A forming roller (2a) is used to form flanges (1c,d) out of a previously formed bending section of a flat or formed sheet (1) during relative movement between plate and roller. During this process, at least one flange section is compacted less than other flange sections. Support bodies (3a,4a) engage on opposite surfaces of the plate. The used blank is a longitudinal profiled plate, or a hollow metal profile.
