A sensor assembly (20) for use in a vehicle seat for detecting the presence of an occupant comprises a first member (50) defining an internal bore, a second member (52) slidably disposed in the bore, a spring (56) for biasing the second member relative to the first member, a magnet (58) and a hall effect sensor (40). A plurality of such sensor assemblies may be mounted on a mat (30) placed in the vehicle seat and the occupant is sensed as the magnet is urged towards the sensor thus generating a sensor signal. Each assembly (20) on the mat may have springs with different spring constants or magnets with different strengths such that the mat response may be tuned. |
