A variable wavelength optical filter (1) comprising a light-transmitting dielectric crystal section (2) formed of a dielectric crystal having a cubic structure and exhibiting second-order electro-optic effect, mirror sections (5, 6) constituting Fabry-Perot etalon together with the dielectric crystal section, and electrodes (3, 4) for applying a voltage to the dielectric crystal section in order to vary the wavelength of transmitting light of the etalon through electro-optic effect. Since a dielectric crystal having a cubic structure and exhibiting second-order electro-optic effect is employed, a high-speed variable wavelength optical filter capable of being driven with a low voltage can be realized.
