The invention relates to a homogenated thermoplastic composition based on polyvinyl alcohol in dry form serving as a paper coating agent that does not contain unmelted parts of a size greater than 20 microns and/or 90 % of the unmelted parts are smaller than 10 microns, and in which the degradation rate of the polyvinyl alcohol macromolecular chains is reduced to such an extent that the composition is a composition having a translucent appearance of a white or yellow color with a color index b* in the system CIELAB of less than or equal to 10, preferably less than or equal to 5, and which also contains at least one plasticizer and at least one hydrophobic or hydrophilic additive having a filtering effect.
