The method involves measuring the deformation of a measurement body (3) caused by the relative movement of the two objects (1,2) and evaluating the signal of a deformation sensor (4). The measurement body undergoes a deformation by extending in an area along its longitudinal axis (6) and compressing at another area, whereby the deformation sensor is extended/compressed and a physical property of the sensor is output as a first measurement signal. An independent claim is also included for the following: (a) a measurement device for measuring a distance covered.
