A component management service (10) provides component management for a client computer system (12) formed of a plurality of computers (14) and a plurality of peripheral devices (16). The service (10) collects together information regarding defects and updates of components of the system (12), compares these with a list of the components of the system and notifies the system administrator (18) whether any of the components of the system require modification to correct for defects or to implement updates.
