PURPOSE: A linear compressor and a control method thereof are provided to detect and control the position of a piston precisely without any influences of external environment. CONSTITUTION: A linear compressor includes a core part(4) connected to a side of a piston for detecting a position of the piston which reciprocates in the vertical direction, and a sensor unit(1) having first and second sensor coils(2a,2b) for sensing the position of the core part. The core part has an upper core(4a) of a length smaller than half of the serial connection between the first and second sensor coils, and a lower core(4b) positioned with a predetermined distance from the upper core. The center between the upper and lower cores passes the center between the first and second coils when the piston passes the center of the reciprocation. On the basis of the top dead center, the control part controls the position of the piston.
