<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operating method, which can realize a resumption of printing operation without any problem even after an interruption for a very long period of time, and to provide a printing machine provided with a device including a wetting apparatus roller suitable for this method. <P>SOLUTION: A printing machine 1 comprises a wetting apparatus 4 including a wetting apparatus roller 12. During the interruption of printing, makeup wetting water is intermittently supplied to the wetting apparatus roller 12, whereby the wetting apparatus roller 12 is kept in such a state that it is ready for printing operation. For example, a roller gap W within the wetting apparatus 4 is first closed during the interruption of printing to supply makeup wetting water to the wetting apparatus roller 12 through the roller gap W.
