PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that a phenomenon of a difference in color tones on the boundary of regions occasionally occurs because of non-linearity for each region of an area imaging device. SOLUTION: In the image pickup device which comprises an area imaging device 100 and processes an image signal corresponding to each image pickup region outputted from the area imaging device 100, a luminance level of an image signal in each region is detected by a luminance level detecting circuit 120, gains of amplifier circuits 113, 114 for amplifying image signals corresponding to image pickup regions are set in accordance with the detected result, and the saturation of the image signal for each region is controlled by a color difference gain amplifier 121 in accordance with the set gains of the amplifier circuits 113, 114.
