PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a diarylethene compound that exhibits excellent compatibility with a liquid crystal compound and has a transition moment perpendicular to the orientation direction of a liquid crystal.

SOLUTION: The diarylethene compound is represented by general formula (1) (P is a group represented by formula (a) or formula (b); R1, R3and R5are each an alkyl group which may contain a substituent group or the like; R2and R4are each a hydrogen atom or the like; R6is a monofunctional aromatic cyclic group which may contain a substituent group; R7is a hydrogen atom or the like; X is a hydrogen atom or the like; Y is a single bond or the like; A and B are each an aromatic hydrocarbon six-membered ring or the like; k is an integer of 5-8; m is 1 or 2).
