PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image detector for paper currency which enables cost reduction. SOLUTION: This image detector for a paper currency has a light emitting means 31 (31X), a light emitting means 27 (27X), a light emitting means 31 (31Y), and a light emitting means 27 (27Y). The light emitting means 31 (31X) is arranged oppositely to an image detecting sensor 24 (24X), and emits one wavelength band of light beam toward a paper currency S to detect transmission light in the paper currency S by the image detecting sensor 24 (24X). The light emitting means 27 (27X) is arranged at the same side as the image detecting sensor 24 (24X), and emits a plurality of light beams different in wavelength bands toward the paper currency S to detect reflection light thereof by the image detecting sensor 24 (24X). The light emitting means 31 (31Y) is arranged oppositely to an image detecting sensor 24 (24Y) at the opposite side of the image detecting sensor 24 (24X), and emits another wavelength band of light beam toward the paper currency S to detect transmission light in the paper currency S by the image detecting sensor 24 (24Y). The light emitting means 27 (27Y) is arranged at the same side as the image detecting sensor 24 (24Y), and emits a plurality of light beams different in wavelength bands toward the paper currency S to detect reflection light thereof by the image detecting sensor 24 (24Y).
