In a screen for an electron beam display device comprising a layer 36 of a single active material adhering to a substrate layer 34 and provided with means 38 for removing free electrons, flaking of the layer 36 due to heat is minimized by providing in the layer a predetermined pattern of discontinuities 42 extending substantially over the whole layer and being sufficiently fine to be normally visually unobservable. A dark trace screen is manufactured by the vapour deposition in vacuo through a 200-400 line/inch wire mesh of a layer 36 of KCl on to a mica substrate 34. A covering layer 38 of A1 is then provided.
