Apparatus for producing an optical effect, in particular a flame simulating effect is described. The apparatus arranges a light source below a reflecting means and a means for modifying light from the light source in front of the light source and below a partially diffusing and partially transmitting viewing screen. The apparatus uses alternative heat sources whereby the conventional fan heater is dispensed with, allowing quieter operation and a reduction in the front-to-back dimension of the appliance.
