PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a gap adjusting device which can adjust a gap by a small rotational torque, and moreover can set a larger number of gap positions. SOLUTION: The gap adjusting device 50 changes a height position PG (paper gap) of a shaft which guides a carriage by rotating bush members 67 and 68. An intermediate gear 65 meshed with the bush members 67 and 68 has a boss 65c. The boss 65c is loosely inserted into a cam groove 53 formed at a slidable slide member 51. The PG is changed by the sliding operation of the slide member 51. Self weights of the carriage and the carriage guide shaft are transmitted to the boss 65c via the bush members 67 and 68 and the intermediate gear 65, and the boss 65c is pressed in contact with a side wall of the cam groove 53.
