In an engine where a valve lift amount can be continuously varied, a valve- moving device, having a valve lift-varying mechanism, for an engine is capab le of increasing and reducing a valve lift amount without changing a valve opening angle and is also capable of reducing a tappet clearance according t o reduction in the valve lift amount. This prevents an increase in the ratio o f a tappet clearance to a valve lift amount in a low valve lift condition, minimizing effects by variation of a tappet clearance and also reducing a valve seating speed in a low valve lift condition to prevent noise from bein g produced. Reduction in engine performance in a high valve lift condition caused by variation of a tappet clearance is prevented and a valve seating noise in a low valve lift condition is reduced.
