<p>1,103,631. Vehicle headlamps. S. IMAI. 24 May, 1965 [25 May, 1964 (2)], No. 21860/65. Heading F4R. In a vehicle headlamp the lens or front glass comprises two portions 40<SP>1</SP> and 40, the portion 40<SP>1</SP> including a pair of interengaging prismatic plates with one face 35<SP>1</SP> of each prism being opaque so that light transmitted through the portion 40<SP>1</SP> is directed below the horizontal and light transmitted through the portion 40 is directed in a direction different from that directed by the portion 40<SP>1</SP>. Each portion 40<SP>1</SP>, 40 may be associated with its respective light source 38, 381, the sources being operated individually and separated by an opaque plate 39 with upper and lower reflective surfaces. As shown, the portion 40 is similar to the portion 40<SP>1</SP> but reversed relatively thereto so as to direct light upwards and the light source 381, which is weaker than light source 38, may be switched off on meeting oncoming vehicles to eliminate glare to the oncoming driver. The lens may be covered by a transparent protective plate 40<SP>11</SP>. In modifications, the upper portion 40 may comprise arcuate or V-shaped arrangements of prisms, a transparent or frosted portion or a small convex lens, or the prisms may be arranged vertically with the two portions on opposite sides of a central line and the prisms on the two sides relatively reversed. The lens portions may be coloured differently or be covered by light filters, e.g. red on one side and green on the other.</p> |
