The method involves determining the time lapse of the deceleration or braking in closed drive train up to a disconnection of the drive train in a switching operation. The method further involves using a sustained-action brake which may be a retarder, an engine brake, an exhaust flap brake or a combination of them. The automatic application of the main brake is limited to a predetermined time duration.
