<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for managing the life of a toner cartridge where the display of toner residual amount is constituted to be inexpensive and easy-to-view for a user in the case of managing the life of the toner cartridge. <P>SOLUTION: Figure is the explanatory drawing of an example that the display of the toner residual amount is performed by the invention. In the figure, (a) corresponds to a large-capacity toner cartridge and (b) corresponds to a small-capacity toner cartridge. In (a), D4 is the maximum value (initial value) of a toner counted value, and the display of the toner residual amount in this case is 100%. D3 is the near end value of the toner counted value, D2 is the end value of the toner counted value, and D1 is the end end value of the toner counted value. In the example (a), the near end value D3 shows 20% in the display of the toner residual amount.
