PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display having the characteristics of a wide viewing angle and high display quality. SOLUTION: The display has a plurality of pixel regions each defined by a first electrode formed on the liquid crystal layer side of a first substrate and by a second electrode formed on a second substrate and opposing to the first electrode via the liquid crystal layer. In each pixel region, the first electrode has a plurality of openings and filled parts. The liquid crystal layer produces a vertical alignment state when no voltage is applied between the first electrode and the second electrode: when a voltage is applied between the first electrode and the second electrode, the liquid crystal layer produces a plurality of liquid crystal domains having a radial graded alignment state in each of the plurality of openings and filled parts, and display is performed when alignment status of two or more liquid crystal domains changes according to applied voltage, corresponding to liquid crystal domain is also contribute to display in opening by oblique electric fields generating in the edges of the openings of the first electrode.
