PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make co-exist a reduction in shock caused in gear selection and the prevention of shock in engine racing by the manual valve opening control of a shift-by-wire automatic transmission. SOLUTION: When S2 determines that starting with an accelerator opening of APO and an engine rotational speed of Ne is not intended while S1 determines that a set time T0 is not yet passed by N→D selection, a manual valve is positioned from an N range to a D range temporarily by the forward rotation of a motor by using S3 and S4, and a manual shaft rotating positionδwhere the D range port openingαof the manual valve is set to an opening for reducing selection shock is calculated with S5. When S6 determines that a friction element for starting starts tightening, S7 and S8 reduces the openingαto the opening for reducing the selection shock by the reverse rotation of the motor 6. When S2 determines that there is the intention of starting, S13 and S14 forwardly rotate the motor to stroke the manual valve from an N range to the D range and keep that position, and hold the openingαat the maximum opening to complete the tightening of the friction element for starting before engine racing.
