PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a battery checker for a portable device capable of determining an exhausting state according to a kind of a battery even if the kind of the battery cannot be automatically distinguished. SOLUTION: When a MCU1 detects that the battery 7 is mounted by the level of a signal from a switch 5 for detecting the existence of the battery inputted in an input port P3, it makes a display urge a user to input the information of the kind of the battery. The MCU1 selects either a determination criterion for a primary battery or a determination criterion for a secondary battery as a determination criterion of exhaustion for the voltage of the battery 7 according to an operation signal indicating the kind of the battery inputted from an operating member 6. Using a signal from a battery checking circuit 4, the MCU1 detects the voltage of the battery and (1) turns on all display segments for displaying a battery mark on the display when the battery voltage > exhausting determination criterion, (2) turns off a part of the display segments of the battery mark on the display when the exhausting determination criterion≥the battery voltage > an operation prohibition voltage, (3) and blinks display segments of the battery mark on the display when the operation prohibition voltage≥the battery voltage.
