In one embodiment the battery operated device comprises a battery (12, 708, 756) and at least one child unit (14, 600, 710, 752) mounted with the battery so as to be incorporated into the battery itself or into a housing (652, 704) of the battery, or stacked onto the battery. In another embodiment the battery operated device comprises a battery (802, 834, 852) and an adapter (804, 820, 855) configured for attaching to the battery and drawing power therefrom, the adapter comprising the child unit circuitry. The electronic device may be a cell phone (10) having a cell phone battery (12, 834), or some other portable device using a conventional battery (756, 802).
