PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller for an internal combustion engine capable of keeping good operability by smoothly switching the operations of the internal combustion engine in the transient driving operation of a driver. SOLUTION: In the internal combustion engine wherein both of a spark ignition operation and a compression ignition operation can be performed, this controller comprises transient driving operation detecting means 28, 30 for detecting the transient driving operation, and an operation switch control means 30 for switching the operation from the compression ignition operation to the spark ignition operation, when the transient driving operation detecting means 28, 30 detect the transient driving operation.
