<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To keep positions of all items in a library virtually on a real time basis and to use a monitoring system as a security device for minimizing risk in which books are taken out from the library without approval, in relation to a monitoring system having multiple monitoring object items each having a radio frequency identification device having a specific identification code attached, multiple radio frequency identification device readers 9 arranged in a monitoring object area, and a processing device 1 connected to a database with indication of the position of each item in the area, and the respective radio frequency identification devices. <P>SOLUTION: Each radio frequency identification device reader 9 identifies all the items in the vicinity of the reader 9, and executes a plurality of scanning operations for transmitting the identification codes of the respective positioned items to the processing device 1.
