PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect abnormality of a dry sump oil supply type engine early. SOLUTION: In S2, each sampling value of drive resistance of a scavenging pump is stored in a memory. In S4, an average value Tave(n) of the sampling values is calculated. If it is determined that difference between the previous average value Tave(n-1) and the present average value Tave(n) is larger than a predetermined value X1 in S5, deterioration of lubricating oil is determined. If it is determined that standard deviationσT of the sampling values is larger than a predetermined value X3 in S8, deterioration of a piston ring is determined. Further, if it is determined that inclination AT of the sampling value is larger than a predetermined value X4 in S11, occurrence of biting of foreign matters or seizure in the scavenging pump is determined.
