PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an edge position detection device having a wide visual field, and hardly influenced by fluctuation of a pass line of a belt-like object. SOLUTION: This edge position detection device 10 is equipped with a photodetector 12 comprising a contact type image sensor, and a processing means 17 for determining a threshold for binarization of the output voltage of the photodetector 12. The processing means 17 determines as the threshold, a voltage corresponding to the point where the waveform of the output voltage of the photodetector 12 is not fluctuated even if the pass line of the belt-like object 16 between a floodlight 11 and the photodetector 12 is fluctuated.
