PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the durability of a magnetic recording medium by improving the sticking of the lubricant on a protective film of the magnetic recording medium and the reduction of the internal stress, as to the magnetic recording medium and its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium is formed so that a magnetic layer 4, a carbonaceous protective film 5 and a lubricant layer 6 consisting of perfluoro polyether are laminated in this order on a substrate 1. The cabonaceous protective film 5 is provided with an area constituted of two or more elements containing carbon at the boundary with the magnetic layer 4 and at the surface whereon the lubricant layer 6 consisting of perfluoro polyether is laminated, and also the carbon concentration rate is increased as the position approaches the center in the thickness direction.
