PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for rapidly and substantially completely removing allyl alcohol from crude acetonitrile produced as a by-product in producing acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile by ammoxidation without corrosion of an apparatus material. SOLUTION: The method for removing allyl alcohol from acetonitrile comprises bringing an acid anhydride into contact with acetonitrile containing allyl alcohol as an impurity and then distilling the acetonitrile. The method for removing allyl alcohol from acetonitrile comprises making a catalyst (especially p-toluenesulfonic acid) exist when the acid anhydride is brought into contact with acetonitrile.
