Methods of an apparatus (10) for washing an array of sites (24) in high-density microplates or similar assay plates (18) wherein the microplates or assay plates (18) are washed in an inverted or nearly inverted position, rather than in an upright position. Preferably, the wash liquid (48) is dispensed upwardly in the form of a sheet from a nozzle (34) mounted on a spray bar (36) as the spray bar (36) moves relative to the microplate or assay plate (18). After washing, the microplate or assay plate (18) is dried with a stream of gas (49) such as air, also preferably blown upwardly in the form of a sheet.
