PURPOSE: A sewing machine contains a sensor for detecting thickness of sewed material. CONSTITUTION: A sewing machine containing a sensor for detecting thickness of material comprises: (a) a base plate(2) containing a bearing plate(23) for materials(24;24,25); (b) a standard(3) which is formed on the bearing plate(23), containing an adjacent arm having a head(5); (c) a stitch forming place(21) containing a sewing needle(11); (d) a supplying device(30) supplying the materials(24;24,25) in a supplying direction(31); (e) the sensor containing a circuit transmitting values corresponded with the thicknesses(d1,d2) of the materials(24;24,25) to an electromagnetic controlling system; (f) the electromagnetic controlling system containing a unit transmitting alter command according to the thickness detected by servo parts(15,29) and/or an electromotor(9) on the sewing machine; (g) an ultrasonic sensor(34) containing a transmitter part and a receiver part; and (h) the transmitter part and the receiver part installed over the stitch forming place(21) and the bearing plate(23) in the supplying direction(31) at intervals of distance(a).
