PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive angular velocity sensor capable of highly precisely detecting angular velocities through the use of a vibration mode which can not be caused by external vibrations. SOLUTION: The angular velocity sensor is provided with a vibrator 2 made of a magnetostrictive material; a first coil 4 arranged in a first plane including the axis A of the vibrator 2 in such a way as to include the vibrator 2; a support member 3 made of a nonmagnetic material for supporting the vibrator 2 section of the surface of the vibrator 2 through which the axis A passes; and a second coil 6 arranged in a second plane which intersects with the first plane and includes the axis A in such a way as to include the vibrator 2 and the first coil 4. The first coil 4 generates vibrations in the vibrator 2 along the direction of a magnetic field due to magnetostrictive effects by generating the magnetic field in the vibrator 2 on the basis of a supplied exciting current. The second coil 6 detects changes in magnetic flux according to vibration changes based on the Coriolis force acting on the vibrator 2 according to angular velocities. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
