PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device securing startability of a lamp, and by securing a service life of a switching element for a discharge gap or the like. SOLUTION: An igniter part 3 for applying a high-voltage pulse to the lamp La in starting is equipped with: a capacitor C1 for pulse generation; a series circuit comprising a primary winding PT1a of a pulse transformer PT1 connected in parallel with the capacitor C1 and the discharge gap GAP; and a secondary winding PT1b of the pulse transformer PT1 serially connected to the lamp La. The capacitor C1 is charged by an igniter charge part 4, and the discharge gap GAP conducts current when the end-to-end voltage reaches a predetermined switching voltage Vs or above. A multilayer ceramic capacitor is used for the capacitor C1; and has a characteristic wherein the higher the switching voltage Vs of the discharge gap GAP is set, the more the effective capacitance of the discharge gap GAP is reduced in conducting the current.
