An imaging system scans a pulsed laser light source 40 over an object 12 and receives the reflected pulse signal in a stationary two dimensional (2D) multi region light detector (array) 70, 54. The time of flight (TOF) of the signal 56 is calculated to give the distance to the image and hence allows a three dimensional (3D) image of the object to be constructed 18. The light source scanning mechanism 42, 44 is synchronised 52 so the different regions of the object are scanned and imaged onto different regions of the detector 70, where the different regions of the detector can be actuated separately 52. Alternatively, there may be a plurality of light sources rather than a single scanned source. The object may be scanned a second time and only the regions of the array that were illuminated in the first scan are used to determine the time of flight.
|
