PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotation angle detector and a rotation angle detecting method having high design flexibility and accurately detecting an absolute angle of a rotary shaft while coping with a change of the rotary shaft, rotational speed of the rotary shaft, or measurement accuracy. SOLUTION: This rotation angle detector 1 detects the rotation angle of a rotatably disposed rotor part 4 as an absolute angle. On a peripheral surface of the rotor part 4, first and second transmission gears 4A and 4B different in the number of teeth from each other are provided and arranged in the direction of a steering-wheel rotary shaft member 2. First and second output gears 5 and 6 are provided and rotatably engaged with first and second transmission gear parts 4A and 4B, respectively, to output first and second angle signals corresponding to their rotation.
