POSITIVE ELECTRODE FOR LITHIUM SULFUR BATTERY USING NONIONIC CELLULOSE-SERIES COMPOUND THICKENER AND BINDER HAVING EXCELLENT BINDING FORCE, AND LITHIUM SULFUR BATTERY CONTAINING THE POSITIVE ELECTRODE

PURPOSE: A positive electrode for a lithium sulfur battery and a lithium sulfur battery containing the positive electrode are provided, to reduce the content of a binder and to increase the content of an active material by using a nonionic cellulose-series compound thickener and a binder having excellent binding force, thereby improving the energy density of a positive electrode by 20% or more. CONSTITUTION: The positive electrode comprises a positive electrode active material; an electrically conductive material; a binder; and a thickener comprising a nonionic cellulose-series compound. Preferably the nonionic cellulose-series compound is a cellulose polymer represented by the formula 1, wherein R is a C1-C10 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group, and the content is 0.1-10 wt% based on the total amount of the positive electrode. Preferably the binder is selected from the group consisting of polyvinylidene fluoride, a copolymer of polyvinylidene fluoride and hexafluoropropylene, an acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber, a styrene-butadiene rubber and a triblock polymer of sulfonated styrene/ethylene-butylene/styrene; the conductive material is a carbon powder or metal powder; and the positive electrode active material is selected from the group consisting of an inorganic elemental sulfur, an organic sulfur compound and a carbon-sulfur polymer.
