Virtual private network fault tolerance

The method involves receiving an indication of a connectivity loss on a virtual private LAN service between two nodes (106, 108) when an affected node informs the connectivity loss to an unaffected node. A third node is selected to provide an alternate path between the former two nodes. The alternate path is established using a pseudowire stitched over the third node. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a system for providing a virtual service (B) a computer program product providing a virtual service is embodied in a computer readable medium, and includes a set of instructions to perform a method of providing a connectivity to a virtual service.
