A display system comprises a dimming element (10) for selectively establishing either a light reflective state or a light transmissive state and a display element (20) for displaying information by modulating the light transmitted through the dimming element (10) and/or reflected from the dimming element (10). The dimming element (10) has regions the state of each of which can be selected independently from a light reflective state and a light transmissive state. When a plurality of types of information are displayed on the display element (20), the state of each of the regions is selected from the two states according to the types.
