Flaps (16) in the upper run (15) of a chain conveyor (14) can be opened to allow screened material to fall onto the lower conveyor run (17). An apparatus (11) for screening bulk materials, especially wood chips, comprises a rotary screen device (12) with screens (13) located above a chain conveyor extending substantially parallel to this device. The upper conveyor run contains one or more flaps extending in the conveyor length direction which can be opened to allow the bulk material to fall onto the lower conveyor run below. Some of the material which has passed through the screens will be left on the chain conveyor and combined with the material which did not pass through the screens. An independent claim is also included for a screening method using this apparatus.
