An apparatus for detecting partial discharge in electrical equipment, comprises: an electrically insulating elongate member (13); an ultrasonic transducer means (11) mounted to the elongate member (13) for detecting an ultrasonic pulse or wave generated by the occurrence of a partial discharge in the equipment and outputting a signal corresponding to this detection to a signal processing and analysing means; and a transducer means (17) for detecting at least the radio frequency (RF) pulses or waves generated by the occurrence of a partial discharge in the equipment and outputting a signal corresponding to this detection to a signal processing and analysing means; wherein the elongate member is mountable within a support means that is in turn mountable to the electrical equipment such that at least the ultrasonic transducer means is positioned within the equipment and the elongate member extends through the support means to an end distal the ultrasonic transducer positioned external the support means.
