PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To assure an appropriate compatibility between the friction coefficient and abrasion resistance without a change in lubricating agent constitution in a friction material prepared by thermoforming a raw material comprising a fiber material, a resin binder, and a filler. SOLUTION: In this friction material prepared by thermoforming a raw material comprising a fiber material, a resin binder, and a filler, an inorganic powder 30 in the raw material is a powder of zirconium oxide, aluminum oxide, silicon oxide, or the like, and is contained in the friction material as coated by a metal 40 which is copper, iron, aluminum, or the like, whose thermal conductivity is higher than that of the inorganic powder 30.
