PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate efficient and high-speed address designation of a memory. SOLUTION: A defective memory position bitmap which specifies a defective memory position in a memory is compressed using the vector quantization method. This vector quantization method repeatedly divides vector space. Such divisions employ, with respect to individual codewords selected as processing vectors for each initial division, Boolean OR metric for determining the similarity of the vectors. A particular vector is held as a cordword in a code book over all the repetitions. The vector quantization method is designed to generate an asymmetric distortion in order to avoid the situation where the defective memory position is distorted via compression and extension and the normality of the memory position is erroneously indicated.
