<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical waveguide that efficiently attenuates the clad mode and prevents it from reuniting with the basic mode, and to provide an optical element which uses this optical waveguide. <P>SOLUTION: This clad mode attenuation optical waveguide is composed by adding a light absorbent material to all or a part of the clad and adjusting the refraction index of the clad.
