PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a CPP giant magnetoresistive head capable of reducing the noise and Joule heat caused by an AMR effect of a shield layer. SOLUTION: In the CPP giant magnetoresistive head provided with a huge magnetoresistance effective element having a lower shield layer, an upper shield layer, and a fixed magnetic layer and a free magnetic layer which are inserted between the upper and lower shield layers and laminated through a non-magnetic material layer, a large area non-magnetic metal film which is brought into direct contact with one side and the other of the fixed magnetic layer and the free magnetic layer and has an area larger than those of the fixed magnetic layer and the free magnetic layer is provided just over the lower shield layer and just under the upper shield layer. Further, an antiferromagnetic layer that fixes the magnetization direction of the fixed magnetic layer is provided at a position deeper in a height direction than that of the giant magnetoresistive element. Otherwise, without being provided with the antiferromagnetic layer, the dimensions of the fixed magnetic layer in a height direction is made sufficiently longer than the dimensions in the direction of track width, and the magnetization direction of the fixed magnetic layer is stabilized by shape anisotropy.
