PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image data processing method whereby blur of an image is avoided by maintaining the sharpness of the image while effectively eliminating moire from image data resulting from optically reading an original and to provide a program for specifying the processing procedures. SOLUTION: The method sets a sufficiently large mask area applied to the processing of smoothing image data from respective target pixels, decides that the image data from the target pixels require no smoothing when a differentiated value of the image data from the target pixels is high, verifies binary data of the image data from pixels in the mask area when a differentiated value of the image data from the target pixels is low, selects smoothing processing object pixels and executes the smoothing processing.
