PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a smooth surface and to reduce the formation of smuts in pickling for the hot rolled steel sheet of high carbon steel such as carbon steel and chromium-molybdenum steel. SOLUTION: As for the descaling pickling method for the hot rolled steel sheet of high carbon steel, in descaling pickling with a descaling pickling liquid consisting essentially of sulfuric acid for the hot rolled steel sheet of high carbon steel comprising≥0.10 mass% carbon, the pickling is performed with the pickling liquid obtained, to an acid liquid consisting essentially of sulfuric acid, by adding a mercarto group-containing organic compound in 0.0005 to 0.003 mol/L by concentration in the pickling liquid.
