PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely eliminate the tracking offset and improve the recording and reproducing performance in recording and reproducing a magnetooptical recording medium of a magnetic domain wall movement detection type. SOLUTION: After a test pattern is recorded on a recording medium in a state in which a prescribed first offset value is set to a tracking error signal, the reproduction of the test pattern is repeated two or more times while changing the offset given to the tracking error signal, and a second offset value at which an optimal quality for the reproduction signal quality of the test pattern is obtained is determined. From the first and second offset values, an optimal offset value for recording and reproducing is determined.
